What is Essential Eight?

Eight ASD mitigation strategies to protect against the most common cyber threats.

The Essential Eight is a set of eight Cybersecurity mitigation strategies developed by the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) to help organisations protect themselves against the most common cyber threats.

It's a prioritised, evidence-based framework, built on analysis of real-world attacks, telling you where to focus your defences first.

What are the eight strategies?

The Essential Eight targets the tactics attackers use most often:
Application control

Prevent unauthorised software from running

Patch applications

Fix known vulnerabilities before they're exploited

Configure Microsoft Office macro settings

Restrict macros to trusted sources

User application hardening

Reduce the attack surface in browsers and common tools

Restrict administrative privileges

Limit who can make system-level changes

Patch operating systems

Keep operating systems current and secure

Multi-factor authentication (MFA)

Require more than a password to gain access

Regular backups

Maintain clean copies of critical data to recover from attack

In isolation, each strategy targets a different entry point or escalation method. Together, they address the majority of techniques used in opportunistic attacks and targeted intrusions.

The maturity model

The Essential Eight uses a maturity model with four levels (Maturity Level Zero through to Maturity Level Three). Higher maturity means stronger, more consistent implementation. Most Australian government entities are required to reach at least Maturity Level Two. For businesses outside government, the framework provides a credible, externally validated benchmark for measuring and improving security posture.

Why it matters for your business

Cyber threats aren't slowing down. Regulators, insurers, and customers are increasingly asking organisations to demonstrate that they're taking security seriously. The Essential Eight gives you a structured, credible way to do that.

An experienced MSP will assess your current maturity level, identify the gaps, and work systematically through remediation, prioritising actions that reduce the most risk, fastest.
