The Coolest Tech Toys This Christmas

We’re not sure where this year has gone, exactly, but it’s already that time of year where we deck the halls and colour everything in green and red! It also means it’s the time where we start wringing our hands and lose sleep trying to figure out the prefect gifts for friends and family.

Luckily, if anyone you know fancies themselves as a tech head, there is no shortage of interesting stuff to put under the tree this year. Here are some of our recommendations for the ideal gifts for the household gadget nut:

3D Printers It’s truly impressive how quickly 3D printing has caught on, but it’s not surprising that is has – the idea of being able to print your own toys, stationary, or anything else, really, is undeniably cool, and in 2014 we saw the first consumer-level 3D printers hit the scene. Priced competitively but still supplying the ability to print objects in 3D, there are now plenty to choose between, and for anyone with a creative edge, this will be the gift that keeps on giving.

GoPro Hero – GoPro and other rugged cameras have been doing the rounds for a couple of years now, but they are just starting to hit that price/ performance ratio that marks them out as worth owning for anyone with some kind of hobby that takes them off the beaten track. For anyone into hiking, biking, climbing, swimming or jumping out of things this camera is the ideal way for them to capture incredible memories.

Microsoft Surface Pro 3 – Microsoft is billing this portable beast as the “tablet that can replace your laptop,” and that’s not far from the truth – it’s a powerful tablet that can run all of your Windows apps and comes with a bevvy of features that work equally well for both work, entertainment, and play. But it’s Christmas, so it’ll mostly be for play until the New Year, right?

Sleepow – For people that have difficulty sleeping at times, this high-tech pillow is essential. Rest your head on it and it will lull you into a deep sleep using calming, low-frequency beats designed to calm and relax. Or if you find it easier to sleep with heavy metal, it also functions as an .mp3 player…

Nike+ Fuelband SE – There are a lot of fitness bands on the market now, but it’s hard to go past the company that really got the fad kicked off. The Nike+ Fuelband SE makes use of Bluetooth 4.0 technology to keep itself constantly connected to your phone as it tracks your fitness goals for the day, and keeps you motivated through social features that you can share with your friends.

Kitty Coin Bank – Sometimes the simplest invention is the most fun. The Kitty Coin Bank won’t make you more productive. It won’t make you wealthy. But it’s so darned cute it’s impossible not to include as a stocking stuffer for someone. Actually, it might make you wealthy. Stick it on your desk at work and watch as your co-workers keep dropping money on to it, simply because it’s impossible to walk past and resist. That’ll pay for next year’s Christmas, then.

Ivation Long Range Wireless Digital Thermometer – If you’re one of those people that sticks meat on the grill or BBQ, and then forget about it while something else catches your attention (many sausages have been lost to this sad oversight), then the Ivation Long Range Wireless Digital Thermometer is the best thing that Santa could stick under the tree. Put the meat on, take the device with you, and it’ll drop you a friendly couple of beeps to remind you when the meat reaches the right temperature. No more char-grilled steak with this handy little device.
